The setting is perfect for TOS cosplay and you've made wonderful use of it. You and your friend are perfect as Female Kirk and Female Spock. You have great legs! :)

It's already been noted how the location you've chosen is ideal, but I can't help mentioning it again. One could almost believe this is on some futuristic planet... were it not for the people in the background (I almost feel like taking it upon myself to photoshop them out). Still, the interlopers don't detract too greatly from what is overall a pretty awesome shot.

You're welcome. And if you've no objections, I actually wouldn't mind giving it a shot, just for the heck of it, though I can't guarantee my photoshop efforts would be any better than whatever you could manage.

Yes, you SHOULD photoshop out the people in the distance, you lazy, lazy Captain! This picture deserves it! :P Maybe even photoshop in an alien sky/ horizon... It is a great choice of location, it really has something of the Star Trek concept of futuristic design, with the curves, lines and angles. It goes without saying you two look amazing. :D

Where did you take the shot? You couldn't have picked a better location - the building makes a great stand-in for the Academy campus. It's got just the right blend of "art deco" and "futuristic."

It really is! I think you're very lucky that you've got a building with the right look just there in your city.

I miss living in San Francisco (I spent my childhood there) as the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant was the set of the TNG Starfleet Academy and HQ campuses (well, it's more like they used the buildings and combined with them matte paintings and CGI "dressing," to put it more precisely).

I'm on the other side of the country in the Deep South doing medical school right now, and we have nothing in Augusta, Georgia that can work for this kind of shot. (Come to think of it, Augusta has nothing other than golf, anyway.) The closest building I've ever been to that even remotely worked was the Baltimore Convention Center in Maryland, home of Otakon:

[link]

That building has a lot of angled braces and a lot of glass and is very large, so at certain exterior angles it also has a "Starfleet Academy" look to it. This shot was taken back at Otakon 2011 when I debuted a TWOK variant uniform I'd designed myself - it's been my pet project for a very long time.

We have quite a few, actually :D

Oh gosh, I've always wanted to go to San Fran, would be awesome to take pics there...

Hm, that building does look like it could work from certain angles, I'd like to check it out (been wanting to go to Otakon anyway).

and that uniform is gorgeous :)

Thanks. =) It was a proof-of-concept outfit and I'm still working on it. It is meant to be a more militarized TWOK variant that Starfleet would only use in wartime, switching from the TWOK into the variant.

It's gone through many rounds of alterations after that, and most recently, I've had the false collar removed (so I can use a real undershirt), gotten golden cuff extensions to the sleeves, and had chains added to the inner lining to look more like the "chain-and-snap" on the TWOK jacket's fastening. Most recently I've collaborated with a propmaker who is actually making a lot of the original badges and insignia I designed for the uniform that I was never able to get (because they would have to be made professionally as they are non-canon shapes) so I'm excited to have those added on.

I'm not as excited when I think about the price tag, though. I can't even guess how much this uniform has cost me over the years. Some of my friends have said something to the effect of "cosplay is throwing money down a pit." >_< It cost almost $150 to get it made in the first place, then I had to get it altered because the tailor shop didn't do the design properly and it didn't fit right... and then we've got the pins, the props, the belts and buckles and so many add-ons and revisions over the years.

But I think a good costume is also something that isn't static. It evolves - whether it does so by you making a better one to replace an earlier attempt or by you improving on one that already exists when you see something that could be better. =) For example, I think your TOS skant is gorgeous too, it looks almost like it could be a set piece and you managed to get that strange 3-part Late TOS construction down really well. The TOS duty uniform may seem like a simple design, but when you look at the details it really isn't. And you can tell a good TOS uniform when you see one, if you know what to look for (like you and I do).

The Otakon venue has more of a TNG look to it, but it worked well enough from certain angles if you could get the right shot (usually that means as many angled beams and as much glass as possible). Your setting worked even better and I think you're really lucky if you can have that many buildings around that work well for "Star Trek." As for 'Frisco, I grew up there and not all of the city looks so pretty. But the parts that do are iconic. They're like nowhere else in the world, and I have a lot of nostalgia for them. Unfortunately, my memory doesn't match my nostalgia - otherwise I could give you recommendations for pictures. *smacks head*

I'm planning on constantly updating my Skant uniform. I've started working on a new hem, and I'm redoing the braid at the moment, and I'll continue adding things to it. Everything has cost me about $300 so far.. haha.

And thank you so much for that ;u;

Yep - like we've been saying, a labor of love like this just isn't cheap! I'm looking forward to seeing what your skant will look like once you've upgraded it. I'm sure the hard work will show. =) And it's no problem - I believe strongly in paying compliments when they're due. People need the support, right?
